Jay Aubertin is a Wilmot, New Hampshire based craftsman who specializes in the manipulation of metal to create both decorative and practical pieces. He has a strong background in forging, welding and fabrication; and enjoys utilizing materials such as steel, wood and copper in his work.
The Process
All projects start with a desire or need. Perhaps you or someone you care for needs a handrail to safely navigate stairs; maybe there is a sculptural idea you’d like to see come to life or something in between. Whether it be for a renovation, design element on a new build or that piece of art you’ve envisioned we ensure that clear communication, completion of expectations within timeframes and the highest quality metalwork possible is our utmost importance. Most of our jobs are unique to our clients and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
After our initial conversation I will provide you with a detailed outline of your project with an estimate and conceptual drawing(s). A site visit is usually required to review final details and measurements to ensure accuracy on fit and location.
Back in the shop production begins. By now we have determined the metals to be used; steel, bronze, stainless, aluminum, copper, something else or a combination of the above. In the example of a handrail, we start by heating the metal in a forge to around 1800 degrees Fahrenheit and then forging it into its intended shape. It will then be bent, cut and welded into its final dimensions.
After welding the railing components together we then grind, file & sand as necessary to ensure it is sculpted as required; it must be void of sharp edges or any other undesirable feature. It will not be ready for the final steps until it is not only visually appealing but also feels good underhand.
Finish depends upon application needs, whether it be to powder coat for long lasting, low maintenance protection or a high heat paint in the case of a firescreen. We are also able to apply a wide range of patina finishes available to further customize your project.
When it is time for installation we will arrive with the necessary tools and hardware to ensure a proper conclusion. The culmination of our efforts results in a product that you will be able to enjoy for many years to come and being a part of that brings us great satisfaction.
